In February 1871, the apparition of a headless woman was witnessed making a nightly trek from Mount Carbon towards Pottsville. Walking slowly with her decapitated head tucked tightly under her arm, she was witnessed at the time when "graveyards yawn and graves give up their dead". The apparition was sighted for several weeks walking the same route. As quickly as the phenomenon gripped the community, it ended.💀
